We recently completed a project for a Secure and Fast connection between Offices in Italy using WireGuard VPN.

Introduction

In 2024, an Italian logistics company with distributed offices in Milan, Rome, Bologna, and Naples faced a critical challenge: ensuring a secure, stable, and high-performance connection between its offices. The traditional VPN solutions used until then were often prone to slowdowns, difficult to configure, and not sufficiently reliable for the growing business needs.

The Challenge

• Speed and Performance: Data flows between offices included the exchange of heavy files, video conferencing, access to centralized databases, and ERP systems.

• Security: It was essential to guarantee the confidentiality of sensitive data in transit.

• Management Simplicity: The solution had to be easily scalable and maintainable, with minimal impact on the IT infrastructure.

• Compatibility: The VPN needed to integrate with mixed systems: Windows, Linux, and company mobile devices.

The Solution: WireGuard

After a technical analysis, the IT department chose to implement a VPN based on the WireGuard protocol to interconnect the company's offices.

Why WireGuard?

• Speed: WireGuard is designed to be extremely fast due to the use of modern cryptographic primitives.

• Simplicity: Configuration is significantly simpler compared to solutions like IPsec or OpenVPN.

• Lightweight Code: WireGuard's core is contained in a few thousand lines of code, making it easier to audit and maintain.

• Cross-platform: Compatible with Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Implementation

The project was carried out in three main phases:

1. Pilot Project: A test was launched between the Milan and Bologna offices, using routers with WireGuard support (e.g., OpenWRT).

2. Extension: After a month of testing with positive results, the VPN was extended to the Rome and Naples offices.

3. Automation and Monitoring: A centralized monitoring system (Grafana + Prometheus) was integrated to check the status of the VPN tunnels and traffic.

Results

• ✅ 35% reduction in average latency between sites.

• ✅ 50% improvement in file transfer performance compared to the previous VPN.

• ✅ Zero interruptions during company video conferences.

• ✅ Management Simplicity: fewer IT support tickets related to the VPN.

• ✅ Increased security thanks to modern cryptographic keys and automated authorization management.

Conclusions

Thanks to WireGuard, the company achieved a modern, secure, and efficient VPN, perfectly aligned with the needs of a distributed and digital business. The project's success led to the decision to also use WireGuard for remote work and secure access to cloud services.
